Dexter Cattle at Beech Hay Clay Farm

The Dexter breed is the smallest British breed of cattle. It is a dual-purpose with the average weight of a cow being a 300 - 350 kgs and standing at 92cm - 107 cm at the shoulder. There are two recognised groups short-legged and non-short, both of which have their equal merits. Dexters cows are extremely maternal and because they are dual purpose milk well. Calving difficulties are rare and calvers are up and suckling quickly. Heifers can be put to the bull at 15 - 18 months old. They are a very hardy breed.

Dexters are known for their longevity and should breed regularly for 14 years or more.

They are early maturing and steers are ready for the butcher at 24 months without supplemenmtary feeding with average carcase weights of 145 kgs - 220 kgs. The beef is nt quality and flavouring, with good marbling.
